About the program

  • The Cape Ann Skating Club Learn-To-Skate (LTS) Program, teaches skating fundamentals to tiny tots through adults. Our Coaches are officially certified by the Learn to Skate Programs of the Ice Skating Institute, USA Hockey and US Figure Skating Associations.

  • Our LTS Program is designed to teach skating skills in a fun, yet structured, environment. We offer on-going sessions so that skaters have an opportunity to progress through many skating levels while strengthening skills. Upon completion of our LTS Program, your child may wish to continue on our Basic Skills Program, which teaches stroking and turning skills required for Figure Skating and Hockey Programs.

Frequently asked questions:

What age should my child be?

Boys and girls ages 2-1/2 and up are welcome. Children not ready will be asked to try again at a later date.

What should my child wear?

A safety helmet is required. Mittens or gloves are essential. Clothing should be layered; termal underwear or tights work well. Avoid heavy snowsuits, which restrict movement. Please, no plastic kneepads.

What about skates?

Hockey and figure skates are appropriate. Skates should not bend over at the ankles enough to tip the blades to either side while standing or skating. Recommended skate size is shoe size or smaller.

How will the lessons be conducted?

A short stretching and warm-up period will be followed by the Ice Skating Institute’s Learn-to-Skate Program. Games and toys are used to make skating fun!

Will my child be allowed to push a crate?

Crates will be utilized until your child learns to fall and get up on his/her own (usually for the first two weeks only). If the child can stand on his/her skates, a crate is not necessary and, therefore, will not be used.

Can parents skate?

Parents are not allowed on the ice with their children during class, however adult classes are offered when sufficient enrollment numbers allow. Typically 2 or 3 adults minimum.
